About Common Hours

We publish thoughtful, useful stories about everyday places, objects and routines.

Common Hours is an independent journal about the ordinary parts of a day that reward a little more attention.

We write about walking, reading, food, rooms, objects and small practical habits. The aim is not to make everyday life performative. It is to describe useful details clearly enough that readers can notice them in their own routines.

Some stories begin with a place; others begin with an object or a question. All of them are made for slow reading and practical curiosity.

How we work

Three editorial principles

  1. Specific over sweeping. We prefer one well-observed street, room, recipe or book to a list of things you “must” do.
  2. Useful without rushing.Practical details matter, but so does the pleasure of reading them.
  3. Ordinary is enough.A walk, a shelf, a market bag or a quiet morning can hold a complete story.
